Volunteer Leader Positions

Overview

This page provides a printable list of Great Waters Group's volunteer leader positions. A position noted with an asterisk * indicates a volunteer is needed to fill a current opening. Please note that the size of our committees varies and in some cases having just one person focus on one topic can sometimes be all that is needed.

Group Chairperson: The Group Chair is elected by the Executive Committee to represent the local group and is expected to serve for two years. This Chairperson appoints various chairpersons as needed, sets the agenda for monthly Volunteer Leadership Committee meetings, and designates representatives or spokespersons from the local group at public meetings or on conservation matters.

Group Vice Chairperson: The Group Vice Chair is elected by the Executive Committee and is expected to serve for two years. This Chairperson leads the meetings in place of the Chairperson when needed and is considered to be “in training ” to become the next Chair.

Treasurer: The Treasurer records the deposits for incoming funds and processes checks for payments that are due. The treasurer gives the Volunteer Leadership Committee a monthly report of how the bank account stands, and reports quarterly on the yearly budget.

Secretary:* The Secretary takes minutes of leadership meetings and emails the minutes to VLC members 10 days before the following meeting.

Conservation Chairperson:* is our group's main point of contact for Conservation events and issues.  This chair's role is to keep our group's leaders, and the Chair of each conservation committee below, informed of events and issues that may require some sort of involvement.

Education Committee Chairperson: The Education Chair coordinates activities designed to educate the public, GWG members and students about the outdooors and environmental issues. This Chairperson works with the Publicity Chair and Volunteer Coordinator to promote environmental education programs and may also be involved with tabling events.

Fundraising Committee Chairperson: The Fundraising Chair coordinates efforts to raise funds that can be used of group needs. In part, these typically include training of members, environmental advocacy and newsletters.

Membership Committee Chairperson: The Membership Chair works maintains our active members database and gives a monthly report on the status of our membership numbers. The membership chair also passes around a sign up sheet to solicit interest in volunteering and membership at our monthly programs.

Newsletter Chairperson: The Newsletter Chair publishes our group's newsletter 6 times a year. The newsletter chair also coordinates the publishing of important articles with the Publicity Chair and the Webmaster.

Outings Committee Chairperson: The Outings Chair works with the Outings Committeeto coordinate outings and information about outing, first aid training for outing leaders and mentoring individuals to become outings leaders if interested. The Outings Chair needs only to attend VLC meetings when he/she is planning outings that might need Excom approval due to costs, distance, risks, or complications.

Political Committee Chairperson:* The Political Chair maintains a committee that is generally most involved in the Fall and the Spring when elections of environmental significance occur. The committee should have a Waukesha / Milwaukee elections sub-chair and a state / national elections sub-chair. The Political Chair receives investigative information about candidates and emails the findings to the State John Muir Chapter for their approval and possible endorsements during statewide and national elections. During election periods, this chair should attend VLC meetings or send a committee member to report on candidates and issues.

Program Committee Chairperson: The Program Chair recruits speakers, hosts and greeters for 9 monthly programs, keeps the VLC posted regarding these events, and writes a one paragraph description of the programs for the newsletter. He/she arrives or designates a volunteer to arrive at Mayfair Mall Community Room on program evenings at 6:30 to set up the room with media equipment etc. for the program. She/he also encourages members to create activities such as museum tours, movie nights, music gatherings, green dinners and activities that generate a feeling of camaraderie amongst members.

Publicity Chairperson: The Publicity Chair makes media contacts, writes news releases for the media to promote our monthly programs and other events. He/she and prepares brochures for the various group activities, fundraising events and or environmental events that are promoted by the GWG. He/she will also be involved in helping to plan effective communications to both the public and the membership by assisting other chairs and volunteers with distributing information, whether by press, print, or the website, so that it can facilitate awareness, the need to take action and increased Sierra Club membership.
