Taking Action on Environmental Issues

You can make a difference with only a few minutes of effort!

The Great Waters Group provides both members and the public with information about decisions that will have impacts on our shared environment and people's ability to enjoy the outdoors in our local communities and state wide.  Our grass roots organization attempts to keep people informed and give recommendations when support is required to influence such decisions.

Sierra Club staff and member volunteers work together to keep informed of issues and communicate their findings and recommendations when it is time to take action.  The effort performed by these experienced and dedicated people, is intended to give others the correct version of the rest of the story on issues that may not be complete or correctly stated in the news.

Business and government decisions can be influenced when enough public support is voiced as either being fore or against a particular direction.  The level of support is typically determined by assessing the number written (e.g., hand written letters, emails) and verbal (e.g., phone calls, face-to-face) correspondence received. The more people who "Take Action" by the examples given, will help contribute to acheive greater effectiveness.

The Sierra Club takes a great deal of effort to inform people about the environmental issues that we face and what can be done to reduce the impacts and harm to the enviroment without that knowledge.  This is accomplished through club magazines, newsletters, publications, news media, Internet, public hearings and more.

The Sierra Club has consistently demonstrated its ability in preventing and significantly reducing impacts to our shared environment that could have threaten life as we know it.  Unfortunately, threats to the land, air, water and life itself needs vigilance and constant oversight

All that is usually required to make a difference is to take action by communicating your concern!

Correspondence Tips

Personal letters are much more effective than email since emails are increasingly being written by organizations and always the people who send them.  eMail is increasing to be the tool of choice for organizations wishing to drum up support quickly, but as email volume increases, its effectiveness is diminishing.

Personal letters carry the greatest influence with politicians, public and private agencies, and newspaper editors.  A personal letter demonstrates a personal commitment to an issue from the time taken to articulate personal points of view.  Such a letter is even more influential when the author does not announce an affiliation with an organization that could give the impression that the views expressed are not their own.
